Most conventional pads contain synthetic materials, pesticide-treated cotton, and chemical additives including chlorine bleaching, fragrances, and plastics — all of which can be absorbed through sensitive vaginal tissue. The good news? Switching to certified organic cotton pads eliminates this exposure entirely.

Hey babe. This one's important, and I wish someone had told me sooner.

I started Adaye because I wanted to understand what was actually in the period products I'd been using my whole life — and what I found genuinely shocked me. So let's talk about it, because you deserve to know exactly what's going on your body every single month.

What's Actually in a Conventional Pad?

Your average supermarket pad is made from a cocktail of synthetic materials. Here's what the label doesn't tell you:

Pesticide-Treated Cotton

Conventional cotton is one of the most heavily pesticide-sprayed crops in the world. Glyphosate, organophosphates, and other chemical residues don't fully wash out during processing — meaning traces can end up in your pad. Unlike your skin, vaginal tissue is highly permeable and absorbs substances directly into the bloodstream without the filtering process your digestive system provides.

Chlorine Bleaching

Most conventional pads are bleached white using chlorine compounds. This process creates dioxins as a byproduct — a group of highly toxic chemicals that accumulate in body fat and are classified as known human carcinogens. The FDA considers the levels in individual pads to be very low, but given that you use thousands of pads in your lifetime and dioxins accumulate in your body over time, cumulative exposure is the real concern.

Synthetic Materials (Polypropylene, Polyethylene, SAP)

The topsheet of most pads is made from polypropylene — the same plastic used in packaging. The absorbent core contains SAP (Super Absorbent Polymers), synthetic chemicals that can cause irritation. The backsheet is polyethylene, a plastic film that traps heat and moisture. None of these materials are natural, and all have been linked to irritation, rashes, and in the case of SAP, potential health concerns with long-term use.

Synthetic Fragrances

Many pads are scented with synthetic fragrances — a catch-all term that can contain dozens of undisclosed chemicals, many of which are known allergens and endocrine disruptors. The vaginal environment is delicately balanced. Introducing synthetic fragrance disrupts your pH and microbiome, increasing your risk of bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections.

Dyes and Optical Brighteners

That crisp, bright white? Often achieved with optical brighteners or dyes that have no business being near your vaginal tissue.

Why Does It Matter More Down There?

Your vaginal tissue is one of the most absorptive surfaces on your body. It has a rich blood supply and no filtering system — substances applied there go straight into your bloodstream. Studies on drug delivery confirm this; it's why vaginal medications work so quickly. The same logic applies to anything else in contact with that tissue for hours at a time.

You use a pad for 4–8 hours at a time. You use around 11,000–17,000 pads in your lifetime. Even if each pad contains trace amounts of harmful chemicals, the cumulative exposure over decades is significant.

What About "Natural" or "Eco-Friendly" Pads?

Here's a sneaky one. Many brands market themselves as "natural" or "eco-friendly" while still using conventional cotton, SAP cores, or partial organic ingredients. The most common trick: organic cotton only in the topsheet, with a synthetic absorbent core. You think you're protected, but the layer absorbing the most is still synthetic.

The only way to be sure is to look for GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification — the gold standard for organic textiles — and to confirm that both the topsheet and the absorbent core are 100% organic cotton.

What to Look For Instead

When choosing a safer pad, look for:

  • GOTS certification — not just "made with organic cotton"
  • 100% organic cotton in both topsheet and core
  • No fragrances — synthetic or otherwise
  • No chlorine bleaching
  • No SAP, dyes, or rayon
  • Biodegradable materials — better for your body and the planet

That's exactly what I built with Adaye's organic pads. Both the topsheet and the absorbent core are 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton — no synthetic core hiding inside. No fragrances, no chlorine bleaching, no SAP, no dyes. Just clean cotton, doing its job.

The Bottom Line

Conventional pads contain a range of synthetic materials and chemical additives that your vaginal tissue absorbs over years of use. Switching to certified organic cotton pads isn't a luxury — it's one of the simplest ways to reduce your chemical exposure every single month.

Your body deserves better than what's been normalised. You just didn't know the alternative existed. Now you do.
